A filmmaker was producing a documentary series on the Iran hostage crisis. Then her father went missing overseas.
This piece was a collaborative effort with my father, an attempt at memoir during one very difficult week in 2021 when my father was kidnapped in Libya and I was in Washington D.C. spending the week with families of American hostages in Iran. It was not only a disturbing convergence of personal and professional life, it was also a welcome bit of providence that put me immediately in touch with the President's Special Envoy to Hostage Affairs and a team at the State Department working to free my dad.

ROLE Contributing reporting
Broken ships. Poor training. Ignored warnings. Multiple tragedies. The world’s most powerful armada in decline.
I assisted gathering information via FOIAs and at the U.S. Naval Archives about the USS Fitzgerald and USS McCain, two destroyers that suffered avoidable and tragic collisions in the Pacific Ocean. I also contributed data organization for the mapping of the ships' movements and activities over the course of several years at the request of the talented group of lead journalists behind the series.

ROLE Contributing reporting
Between 1981 and 1990, five Vietnamese-American journalists were killed in what the FBI suspected was a string of political assassinations. Unlike other violent attacks on journalists, these murders garnered relatively little attention.
I assisted with document research, and tracking down sources in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. I spoke with Vietnamese authorities in the military, national archives and news media to corroborate activities happening along and inside the Vietnamese border. I also assisted in gaining interviews with Thai intelligence officers and a former Prime Minister.
